I Find it Ironic That…
months after breaking up I still did not want to be with him. I knew we weren’t meant to be and at the same time I knew I was still in love with one before him. I couldn’t tell him that, though. It would’ve broken his heart. Instead, I told him that we are not completely compatible and we never would be. I told him we could be friends, but that was not going to be enough for him. He said that he would marry me that day and without me he was empty. That’s how I felt about the other one, and, yet, I still could not tell him that. He begged and pleaded and I told him he would be okay without me. He said he wouldn’t. He asked if I knew what it felt like to want someone so bad knowing that you couldn’t have them. I sighed heavily, closed my eyes, and said softly, “Yes, I do.”

How Can You Say…
has come back AT LEAST once after I’ve broken up with them. They always run back claiming that they made a mistake (WHICH IS TRUE), I was the perfect girlfriend (ALWAYS TRUE), they were stupid (EXTRA CORRECT), and their lives haven’t been the same since I left (WELL, DUH!). I don’t know why they have to lose me to figure out that they need me in their lives. I know the sayings, but I still think the whole concept is stupid. Every time one of them comes back I want to say, “Yes, I know. I’ve heard it all before. Join the club with the rest of them.” Seriously, am I going to always be “THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY”? I’m a little over being the reigning champion of that title.

A big chunk of our conversation at the dinner table tonight included lines like this:
